The author
My name is Brandon Spencer, and I am a professional college student living in Portland, Oregon. My major is Graphic Design but I am studying engineering and music. I am somewhat of a hippie. I drink tea, climb rocks, play guitar at the river, do yoga, brew my own beer, and go to Pink Floyd laser shows. I like people that create havoc. But most of all, I like people that aren’t afraid to upset some old folks. So naturally, I am intrigued by rock and roll.
The blog
strumstrum is a web blog for the living room guitarist. As far as credentials go, I have been playing guitar for over five years now. I also played trombone for four years and know some basic piano. My dad is the music director for OPB Music, so growing up, I spent a fair amount of time in the radio station and around music. I was also in a band in high school (think Primus meets Tenacious D), but that was short lived. Most importantly, though, I have an unquenched thirst for knowledge. I hope that you will learn and make music with me.

Ethic
You know when you see some kids with their garage door open, jammin’ out? With 2 of them on guitar, one on bass, and one pounding on a duct-taped snare drum? And then one of their dads walks out to show them how to play a Hendrix lick? And then the cranky neighbor across the street calls the cops on them for disturbing the peace? That brief moment when time shifts into some kind of strange, musically-centered universe? That is the strumstrum ethic. That kind of do-it-yourself ideal. I hope you will be inspired to go out and make some music.
Criticism
There is music that I like, and music that I don’t like. You will hear more about the music that I like. Naturally, you should read strumstrum with a critical eye, as you should any page on the internet.
Hello
I’m a publicist for John Illsley of Dire Straits and his new solo album ‘Beautiful You’ which is out Monday. I was wondering if you’d be interested in covering the album with a preview / review? I also have video. Please do get in touch, I think your readers will really like it.
